Mystic Swaz: the 2022 final

It’s a big one to call but our prediction powerhouse isn’t fazed. And given it’s a special occasion, he’s also got some help from some of our Champions Journalists…

WORDS Lucas Wills
CJ Extra

Liverpool have quite a few injuries at the moment. Thiago and Fabinho look like they’ll be out, Mo Salah only came on for half an hour at the weekend, Virgil van Dijk only made the bench. Those last two will probably play but they won’t be 100%.

They’ve got a strong squad to be fair, but those injuries might upset them a little bit. I mean, imagine Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Naby Keïta as your starting midfield in a Champions League final. It’s a bit bland, isn’t it? Functional at best. Like plain chicken and rice with broccoli. And the broccoli isn’t steamed, it’s been boiled of all its nutrients.

I actually think Liverpool might have more experience, funnily enough. Real Madrid have got the likes of Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić, but then they’ve got quite a lot of youngsters kicking about: Vini Jr, Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga.

I think it’s a final that will be won out wide; Vini Jr against Trent Alexander-Arnold will be good to watch, for example. It will all depend on how high Real Madrid push, because Andy Robertson and Trent might not be able to go for it in attack if they’re going to leave the defence vulnerable.

The weather’s looking good for Saturday, which I like. You don’t want it to be raining for the Champions League final. Prediction? Real just keep coming back from the dead this season and Liverpool can be got at. But is it going to be end to end or really cagey? Either way, I think Real are going to do ’em. Liverpool aren’t exactly novices in this competition, but Real Madrid and the Champions League: it is what it is, isn’t it?

Prediction: Liverpool 2-3 Real Madrid (Liverpool will go ahead, Real Madrid will score three, Liverpool will get one back in the 89th minute)

What do our Champions Journalists think?

Francesco Sarchi

Inter fan reporter

We had the good fortune of facing both Real Madrid and Liverpool this season in the Champions League. I praised both Jürgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti in my pieces, but I will support Carletto in the final. I hope he will win his fourth Champions League.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Real Madrid

Lucas Gebhardt

Bayern München fan reporter

To be fair, even though Real Madrid always performs in these kind of games, I don't see Liverpool losing this one – especially as Salah will be hot for revenge. With the Reds' defence able to cut out the likes of Benzema and Vini Jr, they should be able to get the job done in 90 minutes.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Real

Aritro Sarkar

Chelsea fan reporter

I think Real Madrid will score first through Vini Jr and Liverpool will equalise through Mané, before going ahead thanks to a Joël Matip header. Benzema then scores Real’s equaliser this time and it ends 2-2 at full time. Extra time sees the scores stay level. At penalties, Thibaut Courtois saves from Robertson and Salah, and though Éder Militāo misses his early penalty, Real shake off the initial shoot-out jitters to win.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Real (aet, Real win 3-4 on penalties)

Andrea Fumagalli

Juventus fan reporter

I think that Mr Ancelotti will be lighting another cigar after the final and I think the winner will possibly come in injury time. You know, Karim ‘The Dream’ is on another level this year and Momo Salah got injured in the FA Cup final… Anyway, I hope to see a super attacking game.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-3 Real

Aaryan Parasnis

Ajax fan reporter

All the teams Real Madrid faced in the knockouts were initially favourites and, despite being backed into a corner, they somehow managed to win each time. I believe the final could play out very similarly, with Liverpool dominating but having their hearts broken by a team that seems wired to win this competition.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Real

Nick Stuart

Liverpool fan reporter

I'd like to think that we could make the big seven a reality. Although Madrid look strong and seen to have found a way throughout this competition, hopefully Klopp will have prepared for that! I think with all the emphasis on Mo Salah being out for revenge, Sadio Mané and Luis Díaz will be allowed to do their thing.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Real (aet, Mané and Karim Benzema in normal time, Joël Matip header to seal it)

Louis Holas

Real Madrid fan reporter

I’m obviously going to back my team. I kind of like that everyone is underestimating Madrid. It’s been the same all season: nobody has given us a chance and yet here we are. I also (maybe strangely, given all the two-leg comebacks) have much more confidence in a one-off game. My team have shown time and again that they are capable of performing when it matters most. It’s going to be difficult and I’ll be very nervous, but I believe they’re going to win. Benzema and Vini Jr to score for Real, and Mané for Liverpool.
