Honouring the stars

With Real Madrid having enjoyed another hugely successful European night against Chelsea, fan reporter Valeria Paz reflects on her club’s glowing past and shining future

Rodrygo caused quite a stir on Tuesday night after celebrating his first goal in the same way Cristiano Ronaldo used to celebrate. It was hard not to feel emotional as he hit the iconic ‘Siiiiuuu!’ celebration that became a staple for Ronaldo during his golden tenure at this team. There is a reason we called him Mr Champions League. That celebration is already a global symbol, so it's no wonder Rodrygo chose to emulate such an iconic figure in such an important match.

Federico Valverde, who claimed the man-of-the-match award against Chelsea, also represents the new generation of stars in this team. The Uruguayan midfielder is a symbol of teamwork, hard work and dedication. He may not have the same flashy goal celebrations, but he embodies all the values that Real Madrid hold dear.

As the club moves into a new era, it's important to honour the past while looking towards the future. Ronaldo may have left the club but his legacy lives on through players such as Rodrygo, who look up to him as an inspiration. Ronaldo's influence on young footballers is undeniable, not just for his skill and talent on the pitch but also for his work ethic and dedication to the sport. From his early days in Madeira to becoming one of the greatest players of all time, Ronaldo has proven that anything is possible with hard work and determination.

At the same time, the club is building a new generation of players who are committed to working together and achieving success as a team. Rodrygo's celebration may have reminded us of Ronaldo's best times in a Real Madrid shirt, but it was just one moment in a match that showcased the team's strength and determination. This side’s outstanding performance was a reminder that success on the pitch doesn’t just come from individual talent.

Valeria first remembers cheering for Real Madrid as an eight-year-old and was soon sharing her dad’s passion for the club. Her top player is Iker Casillas, who she says, “was, is and will always be my favourite athlete. He taught me that success is not only about effort, but also about patience, passion and about staying true to yourself and your instincts. He’s a living legend.” So far, nothing tops Real Madrid’s 2014 Champions League win against Atlético. “I couldn’t hold back my tears when Ramos scored that 90th minute goal,” she says. “Celebrating with my best friends was unforgettable.”
