My Greatest European Night: AC Milan 1-0 Benfica

AC Milan fan Luigi La Rocca’s fiancée was unaware of the significance of the location when agreeing to a Vienna honeymoon

AC Milan 1-0 Benfica

European Cup Final
23 May 1990

AC Milan won the European Cup final in 1989 in Barcelona, but I didn’t go because I was saving money for my wedding which was coming up in the next 12 months.

The 1990 final was scheduled for 23 May at the Praterstadion in Vienna, so I devised a plan. My wonderful fiancée Daniela and I were getting married on 19 May 1990 in Milan, and I suggested the Austrian capital would be perfect for our honeymoon. It’s a very romantic, culturally rich city with charming town squares. And the famous small chocolate balls known as Mozart-Konfekt are irresistible. I booked the hotel in April, hoping Milan would reach the final. I don’t know what I would have done if Bayern München had beaten us in the semi-final.

“We got married on the Saturday and then travelled to Austria the next day. When my wife mentioned that Milan were playing in the final on the Wednesday I acted as if it wasn’t such a big deal. But, of course, I went to the game. Daniela didn’t because she doesn’t care about football. It was tactical and tense, but we won thanks to Frank Rijkaard’s goal with 22 minutes to play. I don’t know if my wife was watching it in the hotel, but I got back there at 3am and I was in seventh heaven.

I can’t imagine a better honeymoon. I saw the attractions of Vienna and Innsbruck with the love of my life, we ate some Mozart-Konfekt and my team lifted a second consecutive European Cup. I returned to Vienna in 1995 for the Champions League final against Ajax but this time without Daniela. That time we lost 1-0, which just goes to prove that she had been Milan’s lucky charm five years before!
