Adidas Spezial & C.P. Company
Remember the Anglo-Italian Cup? Maybe not. Regardless, an Anglo-Italian reboot (of sorts) has come along, in the shape of a two-piece capsule collection that’s fronted by England left-back Luke Shaw and celebrates the 50th anniversary of Italian clothing brand C.P. Company. Another key part of the collaboration is adidas Spezial – which means the involvement of designer Gary Aspden, who we interviewed in issue 3. The two pieces? Italia SPZL trainers and a reworked version of the adidas Haslingden jacket.
Women’s anthology
With Chelsea off to a strong start in their quest to get back to the Women’s Champions League final, the release of a new anthology of women’s football writing is well timed. A standout story is Suzanne Wrack’s portrait of Chelsea coach Emma Hayes and her journey to the top; it is fascinating to read about her decision to head to America to deepen her knowledge of the game. Also fun is Louise Taylor’s look back at the rollercoaster years she spent covering Newcastle United. That Faustino Asprilla hat-trick against Barcelona? Yes, it really happened.

2022 Champions League final
We do love a good logo at Champions Journal and the design for this season’s final in Saint Petersburg doesn’t disappoint. Local artist Maxim Zhestkov’s work is inspired by the great Russian painters Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich, using basic geometric forms to depict some of the city’s most famous landmarks. We’ll let Zhestkov explain: “Working on a piece for the UEFA Champions League final was a creative challenge, as it had to capture the revolutionary spirit of Saint Petersburg that is hidden behind the classical facade of the city.” We look forward to discovering that side to Russia’s old capital for ourselves next May.

This excellent documentary focuses on the impact that footballers of Caribbean descent have had on the game in the UK, starting with the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948, which brought workers from the Caribbean islands to fill post-war labour shortages. The story is told through a series of interviews conducted by writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah, whose own love of football (he's an Aston Villa fan) was marred by racism on the terraces in the 1970s. Here he speaks to John Barnes, Andy Cole, Tyrone Mings, Rio and Anton Ferdinand and Hope Powell, among others, about their experiences.
1692 Collection
Manchester City's Raheem Sterling is well known for making moves on the pitch; now he’s doing the same in the fashion industry. He’s released his own clothing line by the name of 1692, referencing the year that an earthquake hit Jamaica and, owing to the damage caused to the previous capital, resulted in the founding of a new one – Kingston, where Sterling was born.
The debut collection features unisex pieces in neutral tones as well as darker shades; according to 1692, this “echoes the artful construction and endless resilience of the island”. They could be describing Sterling himself.
