Arkadiusz Milik’s Food&Ball restaurant does exactly what it says on the tin, says Piotr Koźmiński

Issue 06

He may be best known for delivering goals but Arkadiusz Milik is also earning a reputation for serving up delicious meals back in his native Poland. Currently on loan at Marseille from Napoli, the talented striker fulfilled a long-held ambition in 2018 when he opened his Food&Ball restaurant and bar in Katowice, the southern city where he spent his youth career.

As the no-nonsense name suggests, Food&Ball reunites Milik’s two great passions. Foodies and sports fans are catered for in equal measure within walls decked out in panels resembling classic black-and-white footballs, many of which also frame the shirts that Milik has picked up from opponents down the years. Come for the gourmet burger, stay for the veritable museum of memorabilia, with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Buffon having all contributed jerseys.

“As a kid I had two dreams: to become a football player and to run my own restaurant,” says Milik. “The second was a secret – only my closest family knew about it. I’m happy I managed to realise both.”

Sadly the pandemic has forced Food&Ball to close its seated area for now, which denies fans the chance to watch games on the various big screens. But the restaurant continues to serve its familiar lunch and sandwich favourites via takeaway. The staff have not stopped innovating the menu either, with recent lockdown additions including the Warm-Up, Defender and Maradona fruit cocktails.

Food&Ball has also stepped up its social engagement since the health crisis began. It delivered free meals to frontline workers and the vulnerable last year, often preparing about 100 meals a day for hospitals and the elderly. “We feel better when we can help,” says manager Krzysztof Ciemiera, with Food&Ball having also auctioned off three of Milik’s own shirts for the WOŚP charity foundation in January. Fair play.
