Snuggle up with Cantona

Eric Cantona

In football, we spell ‘maverick’ C-A-N-T-O-N-A, and for good reason. One of the game’s biggest personalities, Eric Cantona has walked the rarely trodden path of footballer to actor, and now to musician, with his debut studio album, Perfect Imperfection, set for release on 13 March. Though much of the project is being kept under lock and key, Cantona has at least given us a taster of what’s to come with a single, titled On Se Love. Doing his best Serge Gainsbourg impression, the 59-year-old tells a genuinely quite heartfelt story of all-consuming love, contending with galaxies, meteorites and universes, delivered in his rough-hewn, gravelly voice. And with Cantona having written nine of the 11 tracks himself, there’s plenty of opportunity for more pearls of wisdom from the philosophical Frenchman to add to his list of all-time great quotes – along with his old friend the seagull.

Book

Man Behind the Myth

Gianluigi Buffon

Goalkeeping is considered the loneliest job on the pitch and, in his new memoir Saved, Gianluigi Buffon has affirmed just how tough the position can be. Across just over 200 pages, Buffon talks about everything from navigating the highs of being at the top of the sport to his struggles with gambling and depression. The book offers honest insights into his stints at Parma, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. He also peels back the layers on his former coaches and team-mates, discussing how he knew Carlo Ancelotti was destined for greatness as a coach, along with anecdotes about Zlatan Ibrahimović’s tenacity and Cristiano Ronaldo’s mentality. A compelling portrait of one of football’s most revered figures.

Kits

Fine Lines

Juventus

Juventus fans may have needed to rub their eyes on 21 February as the Turin side hosted Como wearing a shirt with a twist – a 90° twist, to be precise. For the first time in their history, the Bianconeri took to the field sporting horizontal black-and-white hoops, the most eye-catching innovation of a fourth kit dreamed up by the club, adidas and fashion photographer Giampaolo Sgura. Also featuring retro long sleeves, and paired with black shorts and socks, the kit claims to combine past and present, echoing a lateral-striped model created in 1996/97 but never worn in a match. Seems the Zebre truly can change their stripes, after all.
