Adidas

There are seldom collaborations in sport more celebrated than adidas and Real Madrid, and their latest release doesn’t disappoint. Accompanying a recent collaborative collection with the 14-time Champions League winners, adidas have released the special edition Predator Y-3 boot.

The boot, which comes in cloud white in keeping with Los Blancos’ own club colours, features an old-school black fold-over tongue etched with the signature of legendary Japanese fashion designer and Y-3 founder, Yohji Yamamoto.

It doesn’t stop there for the Predator. CJ cover star and Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has also announced his own Predator 24 release, named Pure Strike after his own impeccable technique. The boots are white with the iconic adidas stripes and a fold-over tongue in Liverpool red, finished with the right back’s initials on the heel.

Lower Block

For those interested in wider football and fan culture, Lower Block is a publication and website to add to your list. It provides a platform for independent and freelance sports photographers and uses their work in beautifully produced photo zines. We recently got our hands on a copy of its Eastlands MCR 2023 zine, which highlights the work of Manchester-based photographer, Richard Davis. His honest and humble style perfectly captures City’s stadium and the world around it.

Football And How To Survive It

Pat Nevin

We loved Pat Nevin’s first book, The Accidental Footballer (see our interview in issue 8), and were quick to get a copy of his latest release, Football And How To Survive It, where he describes his remarkable experience as player and chief executive at Scottish club Motherwell. It is amusing and fascinating in equal measure, as Nevin divulges the less glamorous side of the game we love. We’ve got a copy to give away – visit the competition page on our website, champions-journal.com for the chance to win it.

Music
For those about to rock

For all the drama and excitement served up in the quarter-finals, one of the best moments of television came away from the pitch in Dortmund without a ball being kicked. Mic’d up and ready to go, TNT co-commentator Ally McCoist looks around as a massive bell rings out. Then again. “That cannae be AC/DC,” he says. “If a guitar comes in here it’s unbelievable.” Cue guitar. “It is! It’s Hells Bells, AC/DC.” Genuine excitement. To be fair, it is an amazing song; the first track on Side A of the Australian band’s classic Back in Black album.

Posted as a clip on Instagram, McCoist is clearly thrilled as Angus Young’s unmistakeable opening riff plays out over the BVB Stadion Dortmund sound system. “Cannae beat a bit of AC/DC, man,” continues McCoist, a smile breaking out across his face. As the drums kick in, McCoist, microphone in hand, plays along. Then a bit of air guitar. He is given instructions by his producer, but the former Rangers man, eyes closed, is somewhere else now. “They’re brilliant. I saw them at Glasgow Apollo 1980, that was the opening tune.” Lucky man. Dortmund’s comeback against Atlético was decent, but that show must have been something else.
