Although they are making their maiden Champions League voyage, Union Saint-Gilloise fans are not averse to facing the heavyweights. Here, three supporters tell the Champions Journal team who they’d most like to face in the league phase ahead of the draw

If you consider yourself a true football fan, then get ready to fall in love with the Champions League’s newest arrivals. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise bring the noise, the thrills, and most of all, the kind of origin story that pulls on your heartstrings and makes you root for this underdog.

For those who don’ tknow, Union completed one of Europe’s most impressive fairy-tale stories last season. Returning to the top-flight of Belgian football for the first time in almost half a century in 2020-21, they launched an assault on the established elite that would take them right back to the pinnacle of the game.

By 2022/23 they were playing in the Europa League, and two years later they had sealed a stunning Belgian crown to end their 90-year wait for another title and truly cement their return to the top of the pile.

Eventually, once the shock of achieving the previously unimaginable had abated, thoughts began to turn to what comes next, and fanciful dreams about which eight teams would be accompanying Union on their greatest adventure to date. We spoke to three Union super-fans to get their thoughts ahead of their first-ever ChampionsLeague league phase draw.

Fabian says, “I would like Marseille away and Newcastle away for the atmosphere and also the stadium.

“I’m someone who goes to the football for the atmosphere and the fan culture and not always necessarily to see the best football, so sometimes I care less about the result. I could say Anfield away, which would be amazing as well.

"But yeah, Marseille, which has an interesting fan culture, and I heard a lot of things about Newcastle andin the stadium there, and Celtic as well would be a big one. Celtic away.

"I’m looking forward to the away games, which is the good thing about Champions League, but maybe one big team at home, like Real Madrid, for example, would be cool."

Miro Miko echoes Fabian’s point about experiencing great atmospheres. "It really is also about the away-day experience for me. Because of that, from the big teams, I would love to play Real Madrid. I would also love to travel to Napoli, not just for an awesome fan experience, but also to enjoy Italian culture.

"The third club I’d have to say is Slovan Bratislava – as I am from Bratislava. But they probably won’t make it through qualifying. I will also say Borussia Dortmund, as we are used to travelling to Germany and we have missed this great club and stadium."

The third fan Rowan Cole wants nothing more than to see his two favourite teams square off. "The dream draw would have to be Arsenal away, to see my British team and Belgian team come up against each other – it’s potentially a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"Otherwise, any of the pot 1 teams away is going to be special, particularly for the guys who played with us in the second division and the lads who have joined us from smaller European leagues. I’m really looking forward to this Champions League campaign,” he adds.
